History of SEANAS
ASEAN establishment in 1967 was meant to accommodate a safe region in South-East Asia. Since 1997, ASEAN leaders have started to think about the development of collective identity among members of ASEAN through the promotion of ‘ASEAN VISION 2020’ as a Southeast Asia community which share and care each other. On the 12th Summit in Cebu the Philippines in January 2007, it was agreed that the establishment of ASEAN community was scheduled from 2020 to 2015 as the deadline of free global market for goods, labors and services.
ASEAN community represents around 550 million population that might creates and attracts the potential market for goods, labors, and services including other animal production sectors. In 2009 at UGM, the South-East Asia Network of Animal Science (SEANAS) has been established with the objectives: a) to enhance the awareness of ASEAN community 2015, b) to increase networking among persons in charge of higher education of animal science (dean and/or head of department in animal science) in ASEAN region, and c) to set up communication forum for higher education of animal science in ASEAN region.
