Advancing Students’ Competencies: the Faculty of Animal Science and PT Medion Held Chicken Vaccination Training

The Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM) via Career Development and Entrepreneur Center (CDEC) once again collaborated with PT Medion in the Experiential Learning program held on Wednesday (11/02). The program aimed to provide students with technical skills along with knowledge regarding the importance of vaccination in the farming industry.

The District Assistant Manager of PT Medion for the Yogyakarta & Magelang Region, Sugiyantoro, S.Pt., stressed that vaccination isn’t merely a routine; but rather a cornerstone in maintaining chicken population health.

“Vaccination helps stimulate the immune system and antibody production, making the chickens stronger. This serves as a preventive action to prevent dangerous diseases such as ND (tetelo), Gumboro, IB, POX, and AI, particularly in densely populated farming areas,” stated Sugiyantoro.

He further explained that diseases in chickens are generally caused by viral infection, bacteria (such as E. coli and Salmonella), and parasites. Such conditions are often worsened by poor environmental management, such as dirty and damp poultry houses, as well as poor ventilation.

During this occasion, PT Medion also introduced several innovative vaccination devices, such as Socorex and Haesuto (precision injectors), Serena—designed specifically for the win-web vaccination method against Pox—-and the Deihara (also known as Digital Automatic Vaccinator or DAV).

Ir. Viagian Pastawan, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPP., the head of CDEC of the Faculty, reported that the program was joined by approximately 100 students from semesters 6 and 8. Of that number, 35 students in their 8th semester were selected to undergo hands-on practical sessions.

“This is an annual program in collaboration with PT Medion for the past three years. We want students to have practical experience before they step into the professional world,” Ir. Viagian stated.

Furthermore, Ir. Viagian hoped that through this program, prospective animal science graduates will not only understand the different types of vaccines—such as ND, AI, IB, and POX—but will also be able to utilize the latest technology to reduce livestock mortality rates and increase meat and egg production.
