Faculty of Animal Science Lecturers Develop a Prototype of Portable Restraining Box

To increase animal welfare during slaughter and security of officers, a team of lecturer from Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) chaired by Ir. Panjono, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN. Eng, developed a prototype of portable restraining box, which was named Gama Abilawa. The tool, which is made of iron / steel pipe, is in the form of a rectangular clamp cage equipped with wheels so that it can be moved around easily.

So far, the restraining box has only been used in the slaughterhouse. Not many providers of sacrificial animal slaughter have restraining boxes because they do not slaughter throughout the year so that their use is inefficient. Without restraining box, cow thresher is often done without the correct method and even tends to be rough, causing the cow to behave out of control. Raging cows will be difficult to control and can injure both officers and people around the slaughter area. read more

“Halal class is held to get closer to the source of knowledge with the people who need it. This forum is a bridge that connects the necessary resources with whatever is on the UGM campus. This class has been conducted for a long time. Previously, a lecture program for the general public “Bagimu Petani Kami Mengabdi” was opened which involved many participants interested in the latest knowledge in the field of livestock,” said the Dean of FAS UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Animal Protein, Stunting, and Excellent Human Resources

During its 75 years of independence, Indonesia has made various efforts to achieve one of its goals, namely the intellectual life of the nation and advancing the general welfare. The state is committed so that its citizens can get a proper education and fulfill the people’s welfare in terms of food, shelter and clothing.

“However, the country still has homework in achieving these goals. The incidence of stunting (short children under five) is a major nutritional problem in Indonesia. Stunting not only has the potential to affect children’s health, but also their level of intelligence. According to WHO data, the average prevalence of stunting under five in Indonesia in 2005-2017 is 36.4%. Indonesia is the third country with the highest prevalence of stunting in Southeast Asia, said the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN. Eng when contacted on Saturday (15/8). read more

18 Fresh Graduates of Animal Science Study Program Completed Work Based Academy Program

18 fresh graduates of animal science study programs from 7 universities in Indonesia completed the Work Based Academy (WBA) program in July 2020. The program with the theme Broiler Closed House Management is a collaboration between the Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM and PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia with the aim of preparing skilled human resources in the world of the poultry industry.

“The WBA program provides skills in the poultry industry to fresh graduates with a degree in animal science, especially the maintenance of broilers using closed house technology. Tropical countries like Indonesia with high humidity and temperatures often cause stress for chickens so that productivity is low. The existence of a closed house allows the environment to be adjusted to the needs of livestock so that livestock productivity will be better. However, there are still few skilled human resources to manage the technology,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU. ASEAN. Eng. when closing the WBA program online on Monday (10/8). read more

FAS UGM Gives Assistance on Ayam Bahagia Breeding at Is Aswaja Lintang Songo Islamic Boarding School

Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM accompanies students from the Is Aswaja Lintang Songo Islamic Boarding School, Piyungan, Bantul, to breed Ayam Bahagia, which is the concept of laying hens that emphasizes animal welfare. Assistance has been carried out by the Laboratory of Nutritional Biochemistry, FAS UGM since August 2020 and include independent feed making, management of laying hens, and sales.

“Of course, the layer farm must be able to be managed by paying attention to the rules of animal welfare. More than that, breeders need to pay attention to the environment. Good management in terms of feed and waste can reduce environmental pollution. In addition, livestock can also be run efficiently so as to increase farmers’ profits,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Lies Mira Yusiati, SU., IPU., ASEAN. Eng, when visiting Is Aswaja Lintang Songo, Thursday (6/8). read more
