TRIBUNJOGJA.COM – So far, most Indonesian farmers are still traditionally raising cattle, where the methane gas produced by livestock is not well managed so it pollutes the environment.
Methane gas itself is one of the causes of global warming which results in climate change, drought, and forest fires.
Also, when methane gas production is too high it has an impact on decreasing livestock productivity.
Seeing this, the Faculty of Animal Science UGM developed an environmentally friendly feed supplement that was able to reduce the production of methane gas produced by ruminants such as cattle, goats, and sheep.
Lies Mira Yusiaiti, Developer of Environmentally Friendly Feed Supplements, named PRO-NIN BLOCK, said the development of an appropriate technology that could overcome the problem.
Through this PRO-NIN BLOCK, it is not only able to reduce the production of methane gas in livestock but can increase productivity in ruminants.
“The appropriate technology is expected to be applied by livestock groups,” she said on Thursday (10/10/2019).
Lies explained, PRO-NIN BLOCK itself contains tannins which are active substances from plants to inhibit methane production in ruminant animals, such as teak leaves (Tectona grandis), calliandra (Calliandra calothyrsus), and mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni).
The plants are processed so that they are easy to use and are given to animals.
PRO-NIN BLOCK technology development has been carried out in the Ayo Angon Youth Livestock Group, Buyutan Hamlet, Ngalang Village, Gedangsari District, Gunungkidul through the Community Partnership Empowerment (PKM) program funded by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education.
“Young farmers are invited to be aware of how to run environmentally friendly farms so that it does not harm, but instead provides benefits for farmers,” she said
The Coordinator of the Ayo Angon Livestock Group, Doni, said he was happy with the assistance provided by the Faculty of Animal Science UGM.
This can add insight into good farm management, especially the decline in methane.
That way livestock is not detrimental to livestock and the environment. (TRIBUNJOGJA.COM).
