RADAR JOGJA – Child growth is not only determined by genetic factors. Adequate intake of animal and vegetable protein is the key to success and this is closely related to parenting.
The issue was discussed at the Seminar on Promotion of Animal and Vegetable Protein Consumption for Healthy, Growing, and Smart Children, in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Saturday (7/9).
This event is a series of Lustrum X Faculty of Animal Science, a collaboration of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM with the Indonesian Children Care Community (IC3).
IC3 Director, Prof. Dr. Ir Ali Agus, DAA, DEA, IPU explained, the first challenge after childbirth is health and growth.
“The growth and development of children are influenced by the physical and social environment, also supported by adequate animal and vegetable protein quality and balanced with other nutrients,” said Ali who is also the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM.
The provision of animal protein obtained from food products of animal origin such as meat, eggs, and milk is the scientific and professional responsibility of the graduates of the Faculty of Animal Science. The second challenge, he continued, is the knowledge and preferences of parents in providing healthy, nutritious, and balanced food. Because the provision of food and nutritional sources of protein requires awareness, willingness, and seriousness because it can be tempted by other needs that can actually be deferred.
Furthermore, the third challenge is that the parents are busy at work so that they no longer have the chance to pay attention to the consumption patterns of their children, even the food affairs at home are entirely left to the caregiver and or merely follow the children’s preferences.
Likewise, Head of the New Technology, Bioterrorism and Food Defense Food, and Drug Circulatory Inspection Section Fitrianna Cahyaningrum, SP, MGz stated, 46 percent of Indonesia’s population belongs to the category of sufficient protein.
“There is 17 percent less protein and 36 percent very less protein intake. If this status is found in children aged 13 to 18 years, it must be addressed immediately because it is an early production phase for men and an early phase of fertility for women,” she explained.
Fitrianna called for efforts to change spending preferences for snacks. “Efforts will be made to buy only chicken eggs, which are more nutritious for children and adolescents,” she said.
Consumption of animal protein is important because it contains essential amino acids that are irreplaceable and cannot be produced by the human body. Amino acids are used for organ growth and to form growth hormones. However, to balance the diet, it is still important to consume vegetable protein because there are other nutrients found in food sources of vegetable protein, but not in animal food. (sce / ila).
