Undergraduate Program (Old)

Educational program

Faculty of Animal Science UGM offers an undergraduate program in Animal Science and Industry. The Faculty designs educational programs adapting to a new paradigm of education, namely, student learning and is not focused more on faculty teaching.  In addition, we also attempt to improve current research result-based learning. Herewith, we expect that graduates will master scientific sciences and technologies so that they are able to think, act and behave well as scientists, apply the technology, knowledge, and skill into productive activities and dedication to society, and follow the global progress of sciences and technology.

After completing the educational program in the Faculty of Animal Science UGM and meeting all requirements, graduates are given title as Bachelor of Animal Science or Sarjana Peternakan (abbreviated as S.Pt.).

Educational Activities

Planning, organization, and implementation of educational programs accept semester credits unit (SKS) as an indicator of education assessment, especially concerning student’s study load such as lecture, practical class, field practical fieldwork, seminar, etc.

Semester Credits Point

  1. Semester credits point for lectures activity

For students; one credit (SKS) for students consists of three kinds of integrated activities such as:

  • 50 minutes for face-to-face meetings with lecturers and the lecturer will schedule the face-to-face meeting.
  • 60 minutes for structured activities: lecturers may not schedule the activity but will plan it.
  • 60 minutes for independent academic activities: an activity that is independently organized by the students.

For lecturers, one credit consists of three kinds of integrated activities such as:

  • 50 minutes for face-to-face meetings scheduled with students.
  • 60 minutes for planning and evaluation of structured academic activities, and
  • 60 minutes for developing lecture materials.
  1. Semester credits points for seminar activity

To organize a seminar, students must give a presentation to a forum, so that one credit is equivalent to lectures activity.

  • Semester credits point for practical classes, field works, and researches for undergraduate thesis.

One credit is equal to finishing of activities for a period from four to five hours per week for a semester or 64-85 hours per semester.

  • Semester credit points for laboratory practice

One credit is an assignment in the laboratory for a period ranging from 2 to 3 hours per week during a semester.

  • Semester credit points for practical fieldwork

One credit is an assignment in the field/company/farms for a period ranging from 4 to 5 hours per week during a semester.

  • Semester credit points for researches for undergraduate thesis.

One credit is the research project for a period ranging from 3 to 4 hours per day during a month, while a month is assumed as equal to 25 working days.

Study Load in one Semester

The study load taken by the student in a semester must not be the same as the study load taken by other students. The quantity of study load of the students depends on their own competency and grade point achievement in the previous semester (except for students of semesters I and II, they determine the package study load).

Registration of Students

There are two systems of student registrations: registration of new student and re-registration of the old student. The university determines procedures and requirements for registrations of new and old students. Students who have registered have the rights to follow all academic activities complying with their study plans.

Students who do not re-register without applying for study leave get a notification (three consecutive times in the semester). If they do not respond to the notification, they mean to resign as students of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM.

Academic Counselling and Study Plan of Student

Before doing study activities, students must apply for a study plan in each initial semester. They fill the study plan form via an academic portal for applying for study plan in a specified period, after students have met all requirements. In applying for the study plan, students must consult with their academic advisors to get approval.

If students are late to fill the study plan form from a specified time, they will loss academic rights in the semester period.

Academic Advisor (DPA) has responsibilities to:

  • Give quality academic counseling.
  • Motivate their students to be quality and successful learners.
  • Lead their students to make planning, intelligent in the process of learning in UGM, so that they are able to graduate complying with specified programs and competency.
  • Help their students possess the competency to internalize glorious values of UGM (Universitas Gadjah Mada).
  • Help their students develop intellectual character commendably.
  • Motivate their students to become graduates who always adapt to sciences and technology progress.

Requirements to apply for a study plan/fill study plan form :

  • Students fill the study plan form in Academic Portal online (via a computer connected to the internet).
  • Pursuant to a specified time, students take the print out of KRS (Study Plan Card) in the Academic and Student Division.
  • Print out of KRS is copied in two duplicates; furthermore, they come to academic advisors to have the copies approved.
  • If the academic advisor is still absent in a time of KRS approval, the head of Laboratory of academic advisor approves the relevant copies (i)
  • If the point (i) fails, the Head of the Department of relevant Laboratory approves it (ii)
  • If the point (ii) fails, the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs approves it.
  • Approved KRS is submitted to Academic and Student Division (original), Academic advisor (duplicate), student (duplicate); after that, they get proof of admission from Academic and Student Division.
  • If students do not submit the approved KRS to the Academic and Student Division, the concerned students do not get registration as active students to follow academic activities in the semester.
  • Students have the chance to change KRS at no later than 2 (two) weeks after the lecture starts.
  • They have the chance to cancel KRS no later than the fourth week after the lecture starts.
  • Students must get approval from the Academic advisors to change and cancel their KRS.

Lecture and Practical classes

Students must follow educational activities such as lectures, practical classes, and other activities complying with a study plan and schedule specified based on valid conditions. Minimally there are lectures for 4 weeks in one semester. Students must fill the attendance list of each given lecture, and they must follow minimally 75% lecture attendance of total given lectures.

If students cannot follow lectures with specified minimal attendances, they may not follow examination for any reason, except they are sick, their close family member dies, or they are serving as the ambassador of academic activities. Students may submit a permission letter to the academic no later than 5 days after students leave lecturing.

Prerequisite course

A prerequisite course is a course as a prerequisite to getting permission to take specific lectures being requirements. Thus, to take course with prerequisite, they can do it if they have met course requirements with a minimally D score.

Examination and Evaluation

To evaluate students in the following lecture activities, the Faculty organizes examination. We organize examinations of all courses in two phases, namely: mid-semester examination and end-semester examination. Examinations are organized in oral and written forms, complying with the specified time. Students who get permission to follow the examinations are those who meet specified requirements. We announce the results of tests in locations in which students can see it easily.

Requirements of Course and Practical Class Examinations

We organize and schedule examinations once for mid-semester examinations and once for end-semester examinations. Mid-semester and end-semester examinations are formal evaluation, we also evaluate sustainable tasks during the learning process such as homework, quiz, group task, enthusiasm in classroom/group discussion, special activities and answering to questions in classroom/group, either oral, written, and presentational forms. We adapt the scheduling of mid-semester and end-semester examinations to the academic calendar of the university. Coordinator (person in charge) organizes examinations of practical classes specifically. The faculty organizes the rule of practical classes and undergraduate thesis examinations.

Students may follow the course and practical classes examinations if they meet all the following requirements:

  • Students are registered for relevant semester and Academic Advisor has approved their KRS.
  • They fulfill administrative requirements issued by the Academic and Student Division and they have paid for all tuition fees.
  • They have followed lecturing activities a minimum of 75% of the total given is a face-to-face meeting.
  • For
  • practice (practical) classes, students must follow practical works complying with specified conditions.

Evaluation

Evaluation of the learning process adopts relative evaluation systems.

  • Students who have the best competency get score A; those who have good competency get score B; those who have medium competency get score C; those who have poor competency get score D; and those who have worse competency get score E.
  • Students who resign unofficially from lecturing activities will get score E.
  • If students have not completed components used in an evaluation done by a lecturer, they get an incomplete score (TL). If in one month starting from the announcement of value, students cannot complete it, their incomplete value automatically changes into value E.

Remedial Examination

Students can take remedial courses for improving the score (grad point). From the remedial, the score used is the one that is the best.

  1. Faculty of Animal Science UGM uses Grade Point (GP) to evaluate the study results of students.
  2. GP = [(total credits of courses x weight scores)]/credits of taken educational activities.
  3. Alphabetic scores are converted into numeric scores to calculate GP:

A = 4; B = 3;

C = 2; D = 1; E = 0.

Each course has only one score of a combined formal evaluation and sustainable evaluation having been consistent with material weight.

Evaluation of End-Semester Examination

We use evaluation of study results in the end-semester examination as a basis to determine total maximal Credits taken in next semester with the following requirements:

Requirements of Credits Loads

GP < 1.50                  = max. 12 Credits

GP = 1.50 – 1.99      = max. 15 Credits

GP = 2.00 – 2.49      = max. 18 Credits

GP = 2.50 – 2.99      = max. 21 Credits

GP > 3.00                  = max. 24 Credits

  • For courses with prerequisites, you may take courses after you have completed the required courses.
  • Students may take courses out of the study program with approval from Academic Advisor.
