Faculty of Animal Science UGM and Bank Indonesia Promote Halal Industry Development

Faculty of Animal Science UGM, in collaboration with Bank Indonesia (BI) of Yogyakarta Province, continues to promote the development of halal industry in Yogyakarta. One of their initiatives is a collaborative training program for Halal Slaughter Experts (Juleha), held on June 26-27, 2024, at Faculty of Animal Science UGM.

The Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation at Fapet UGM, Prof. Ir. Yuny Erwanto, S.Pt., MP., Ph.D., IPM., stated that this training is the second batch.

“There are around 13 participants from 5 to 6 business units, including slaughter house for cattle and  chicken (RPA and RPH). The first batch had a similar number of participants,” Yuny explained during his opening remarks.

Yuny hopes that through this activity, the participants will gain comprehensive competence in animal slaughtering. RPA and RPH are given first priority to participate in this activity. “Halal slaughter training is a basic requirement for RPH and RPA to apply for halal certification. Therefore, RPH and RPA without halal slaughter experts who have at least training certificates cannot apply for halal certification,” he said.

The purpose of this activity, Yuny added, aligns with the government’s plan to require the food industry to have halal certification starting in October.

Meanwhile, Laras Putri from Bank Indonesia Yogyakarta, emphasized that Bank Indonesia supports Faculty of Animal Science UGM in promoting the development of the sharia economy and finance, especially the halal industry.

“Especially since the majority of our population is Muslim. We continue to encourage the growth of the halal industry,” said Laras.

During the two-day training, participants will receive materials from lecturers of Faculty of Animal Science UGM on occupational health and safety, sanitation and hygiene, slaughtering equipment, animal physical inspection, and slaughtering techniques.
