In the graduation period of July 2020, the Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM graduated 5 Masters and 2 Doctorates. The average GPA for Master’s Program graduates was 3.78 and for Doctoral Program 3.85. Thus, until now the Faculty of Animal Science UGM has graduated 795 Masters and 132 Doctorates.
“The learning process is still needed to deal with the challenges of the times that are increasingly difficult. The presence of graduates from the postgraduate program is expected to be able to solve problems in the livestock industry, such as breeding, production, post-harvest, trade, regulation, and so on,” said Dean of FAS UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN. Eng when giving a remark at the graduation ceremony, Thursday (23/7) at FAS UGM campus.
In the event which was held online, the Dean said that along with the increasing lifestyle, there is a shift in consumption patterns. Meat and milk are very important in child development. Therefore, the role of livestock is very important, especially when it comes to stunting problems. Consumption of animal protein is vital in child development. For that, it is necessary to promote the consumption of animal protein.
“The opportunities for the livestock industry are very wide open. One of the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic is that the livestock industry is finding its momentum as a food producer. With the potential for land management and carrying capacity, food production will remain a necessity. Therefore, we will participate in helping the nation face Covid-19 which is a national and global challenge,” said the Dean.
Representative from the Alumni Family of FAS UGM (Kapgama) Suryanta, S.Pt, said that there are two things to target in the future, namely becoming a professional or entrepreneur.
“With a world population of 8 billion, 270 million of them are Indonesian residents, they need adequate and good animal protein. Here the role of FAS UGM is very strategic. For example, there are thousands of franchises that sell livestock products,” Suryanta said.
Suryanta revealed that Kapgama has now established a Protein Shop to bring research results closer to customers. Kapgama Protein Shop partners are all Kapgama members. He hopes that the graduates will contribute to develope Kapgama which can be a starting point for building networking.
“Another world development is the existence of animal welfare in 1905, then developing to antibiotic free, this is an interesting issue to develop. The government has also ratified the ministerial decree regarding free AGP. This is a good momentum and a joint opportunity to produce good animal protein,” said Suryanta.
