Asian University Consortium Explores Future of Circular Economy in Livestock, Agriculture, and Forestry

Delegates from Asian universities, part of The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) University Consortium, attended The 9th University Consortium Graduate Forum 2024 themed “Sustaining Our Future: Circular Economy in Animal Production, Agriculture, and Forestry” held on July 17-18, 2024, in Yogyakarta.

Universities represented at the forum included University of the Philippines Los Banos, Central Luzon State University, Central Mindanao University, Visayas State University, Kasetsart University, Maejo University, National Taiwan University, Tokyo University of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, UGM, IPB University, and Universitas Brawijaya.

Dean Faculty of Animal Science (Fapet) UGM and Executive Officer of the University Consortium UGM, Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., stated that over the two days, participants would discuss and explore the future of agriculture, livestock, and forestry within the practice of the circular economy.

“Current environmental challenges compel us to change agricultural, livestock, and forestry practices to ensure global food security,” Budi said during the opening ceremony at Loman Park Hotel.

He added that the emergence of the circular economy concept, which emphasizes resource efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainability, offers hope for the development of modern industries in agriculture and forestry.

“Our shared vision is how forestry, livestock, and agriculture can coexist peacefully with nature,” he added.

The committee of 9th University Consortium Graduate Forum 2024 involved the Faculty of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Forestry, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM.

On the first day, two keynote speakers were present: Prof. Suadi, S.Pi., M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D. (UGM Fisheries) and Prof. Ir. Zaenal Bachruddin, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM. (UGM Animal Science).

In addition to workshops and scientific presentations, on the second day, participants will have a field trip to Balkondes Karangrejo and Borobudur Temple.
