Faculty of Animal Science UGM Graduates Should Contribute to National Food Development

Graduates of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM should contribute their ideas to the development of national food. This was emphasized by the Dean Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., during his speech at the Graduation Ceremony for the Postgraduate Program for the Fourth Period in Academic Year 2023/2024 on Wednesday (7/24).

“There are still many areas without animal science graduates. As graduates, you must contribute your thoughts,” said Budi.

Budi Guntoro added that besides the limited and uneven distribution of animal science graduates, the public is still not fully accustomed to drinking milk. “Many children and even adults still do not like drinking white milk,” he added.

During the administration of the newly elected president, animal husbandry issues, particularly milk and nutritious food, have become a priority. This includes food products such as eggs and meat. Budi mentioned that currently, 90 percent of the national milk supply is still imported from countries like New Zealand and Australia.

“Animal science graduates, especially those with master’s and doctoral degrees, need to change their mindset to address these problems. Human resources must play a role from the production process, distribution, to socialization of the animal husbandry products,” Budi emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Doctoral Program, Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Ir. Ambar Pertiwiningrum, M.Si., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN Eng., stated that in this graduation ceremony, Faculty of Animal Science UGM graduated seven master’s and two doctoral students. For the master’s program, six students specialized in animal nutrition and feed, and one in animal husbandry policy and business. For the doctoral program, one student specialized in animal nutrition and feed, and one in animal product technology.

“As of June 2024, Faculty of Animal Science UGM has graduated 975 master’s and 157 doctoral students,” said Ambar.

The average GPA for the master’s program is 3.92, and for the doctoral program, it is 3.82. The average study period for the master’s program is 2 years and 6 months, and for the doctoral program, it is 4 years and 10 months. The best graduate this time is Ir. Lanti Yulianti Rebecca Sitohang, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPP with a GPA of 3.98 and a study period of 1 year and 10 months.
