The Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM has planted rare trees on land that will be built as an integrated teaching farm at Saptopsari Gunungkidul on Friday (18/12). The tree planting was carried out by the Dean of FAS UGM accompanied by vice deans, representatives of the Gunungkidul Regional Secretary, the Saptosari sub-district head, the Head of the Animal Husbandry Division of the Gunungkidul Agriculture and Food Service, and the Jetis village head, Saptosari. The rare trees planted were Gaharu, Cendana, and Cempaka.
“Planting trees is a symbol of the physical presence of FAS UGM in the area that will be built as an integrated teaching farm. In that area, dedication and research activities will be focused so that the community can feel the benefits, ” Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN. Eng said when giving a remark at the tree planting event.
Ali Agus said that the land acquisition for the integrated teaching farm is at an exciting stage with the full support of the sub-district and regents. Next year, construction will begin and it is hoped that these small steps will be focused and run according to target.
Head of Saptosari Sub-district, Jarot Hadi Atmojo, SIP., M.Si, said that all levels of society are waiting for the integrated teaching farm of FAS UGM. As many as 60% of the people in Gunungkidul run livestock as their profession but the results are still far from what was expected.
“For this reason, the Gunungkidul government strongly supports all licensing, including lobbying the drinking water company and electricity company to complete the infrastructure in the integrated teaching farm,” Jarot said.
Representative from the Gunungkidul Regional Secretary, Yudi Setyawan, said that from the beginning the Gunungkidul Regional Government appreciated the plan to build an integrated teaching farm. Farm development is expected to increase the Human Development Index in Gunungkidul.
Integrated Teaching Farm
The integrated teaching farm will be built on an area of 3.8 ha in Jetis Village, Saptosari District, Gunungkidul District which consists of two closed house units, cow sheds, feed sheds, office and mess areas, reservoirs, livestock waste processing, and livestock forage land.
The integrated teaching farm facility can be utilized not only by the academic community of FAS UGM but also the community. In particular, the facilities at the farm will be used as learning, practicum, and research activities for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students. Lecturers also have the opportunity to carry out ongoing research to obtain better and more efficient livestock raising management techniques.
In addition, the integrated teaching farm will also be used as a center for pilot activities for breeders in raising livestock properly and bringing profits, discussions and comparative studies related to livestock development.
