YOGYAKARTA – Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM optimized the extension of Emergency status of Mount Agung by giving training to farmers. The skills given were covered 3 functions in facing the disaster emergency condition.
“We optimize the extension time of emergency alert status of Mt. Agung by giving 3 in 1 training for farmers to face disaster emergency condition like this time” Said Dean of Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Dr. Ali Agus when responding declaration letter from Governor of Bali No. 99808/361/SET/BPBD which stated the alert status extension of evacuees treatment caused by Mt. Agung eruption was until October, 26th 2017, at FAS UGM, Yogyakarta, Wednesday (18/10)
Prof. Ali said in his press conference that in order to help government to rescue livestock at Mt. Agung, adjustment towards livestock rescue activity needed to be executed.
“Activity can be developed in an action which has function as long investment, so breath of this rescue can stay longer”, said Prof Ali who was also expertise of Feed Technology.
3 in 1 Activity
He also mentioned that education activities in this feed management was 3 in 1 activity, in which one activity has 3 functions. Those three were rescuing livestock, stocking feed and reducing natural disaster risk.
Education coming from 3 in 1 activity covered training of making complete feed for livestock producers in evacuees’ shelters. “Among of those are scope skills by livestock feed, education of reducing natural disaster risk, saturated and stressed alternative medicine in the shelter” stated Chairman of the Board of ISPI (Association of Animal Science Graduates).
Meanwhile, concerning to rescue station needs, said Prof Ali, his team also sent logistics in form of probiotics for processing fermented feed and also mineral premix and anti-stress supplement.
Education Activity
Similar to that, Vice Dean of Faculty of Animal Science UGM for research, community service and collaboration, Bambang Suwignyo Ph.D stated that adaptation form of activity in the shelter was the existence of education activities.
Volunteers from the rescue station consisted of students from FAS UGM, he said. They still did coordination and collaboration with task force (satgas) for livestock of National Disaster Management Agency (BNBP) in relation with livestock evacuation to the provided livestock shelters.
“Besides, they also collaborate with Udayana University to prepare feed stock so that it can be stored in a long time, the collaboration covers make fermented feed and complete feed” Said Bambang who is also the coordinator of joined post command of livestock rescue in Mt. Agung from Karangasem bali.
According to him, complete feed processing or usually called as livestock feed burger based on rice straw for livestocks damaged by Mt. Agung activity.
“The reason behind the election of complete feed is this feed technology itself, practical, has been tested its palatability, good nutrient content and cheap budget. Meanwhile, fermented feed can reduce damage potential caused by long storage” Bambang added.
Lecturers-Students
Bambang also explained that in this activity, volunteers of UGM, Ray and Anas did good collaboration with lecturer and even students of Udayana university and the participants were very enthusiasts to follow all activities.
He also said that feed was fermented in plastic bags so it was easy to be mobilized for providing livestock feed in some areas that had impacts of emergency activity.
The center of production had been done in rescue station in Ngis village, Karangasem district. Meanwhile, that steps and technology had been chosen and done were because of experiences that were gotten from Eruption of Mt. Merapi year 2010. Though, in the future, fermented process would be done in location of cattle pen involving all livestock producers.
Feed Burger
Bambang revealed that involving farmers in making burger feed was expected to become moment of knowledge sharing for farmers so in the future, they could make it by themselves. Therefore, farmers were able to be prevented to enter dangerous area for searching feed.
“Besides, by following this activity, it is expected that it can break livestock farmer’s saturation in the shelter. The point is, the purpose of this program is to help reducing farmers’ and government’s load in taking care of livestock in livestock rescue shelters” Bambang said.
Data from command post said that, this time, there were 6.000 cows sheltered in livestock evacuation spots. Feed needs were estimated as 20 kg feed/kg, so total feed reached 120 ton/day.
“Therefore, in complete feed technology which has been mixed with various feeds (forage seed and concentrate), so feed giving for complete feed in 8-10 kg/animal/day (Bali cow) has been enough for surviving life of main livestock and able to be stored in a long time around a month or more” said Bambang (GOR)
