The Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM received 59 new students of the Professional Engineering Program in Animal Industry in the odd semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. The welcoming ceremony for new students was held online on Tuesday (22/9).

“The engineering program is a mandatory program of the law. Through this program, we are trying to participate in building high quality human resources, which is one of the priorities of the Indonesian government for this period. One of the indicators of high quality human resources is professional attitude and competence,” said the Head of the Animal Science Engineering Vocational Board and the Dean of the FAS UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN. Eng when giving a remark at a welcoming ceremony for new students.

The Dean added that the livestock engineer profession is part of one of the human resource maps that needs to be developed. This is because the responsibility is not easy, namely participating in helping to provide animal protein which is a vital substance for human resources.

“The programs that can be taken in the Professional Engineering Program in Animal Industry are regular and RPL. In order to equip students, including engineer participants, facilities and infrastructure at FAS UGM are always improved. Collaboration with industry is intended to close the gap between industry and higher education. In order to face challenges and problems, the industrial world and higher education need to join hands closely to prepare qualified human resources. The engineering program is a bridge that brings the world of academia and industry closer together. This bridge needs to be built together in order to participate in national development,” said the Dean.

The Dean hopes that students can study effectively to obtain the title of animal industry engineer and professional engineer from the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII). Animal industry engineers have become part of the PII extended family, in which there is a Animal Industry Engineering Vocational Board chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM.

“We are grateful to be a big family in PII with various disciplines that exist both biological and non-living. PII also collaborates at the Asia Pacific level to enable alumni of PII members to take part and work together in Asia Pacific countries. The cooperation has given rise to recognition so that professional engineers are recognized in the Asia Pacific,” the Dean explained.

On this occasion, the Dean thanked the engineer program participants from Timor Leste, including the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of Timor-Leste, Pedro dos Reis, L. Agp. As many as 19 people from Timor Leste were accepted as new engineering students.

“The challenges ahead are not getting lighter. I hope that as long as participants take RPL and regular education, they will also get important things, especially professional ethics, because professional characteristics are maintaining ethics, integrity, and being professional in carrying out work. That mission is what we need to maintain so that as professional engineers uphold professional ethics, ” Ali said.

Head of the Professional Engineering Program in Animal Industry, Prof. Dr. Ir. Zuprizal, DEA., IPU., ASEAN. Eng said, of the 59 students admitted, 54 took the Past Learning Recognition program (RPL) and 5 people took the regular program.

“The regular program is intended for graduates with a degree in animal husbandry with a minimum of 2 years experience in engineering practice. Meanwhile, the RPL program is for livestock graduates who have at least 5 years of experience in engineering practice, ” Zuprizal said.
