This open examination followed the closed examination that was held on February 27, 2023. In this open examination, the candidate will present her dissertation titled “Study on the Potential of Essential Oil from Galangal Rhizome (Alpinia galanga) and Its Application on Microbial Population, Fermentation Parameters, Rumen Nutrient Digestibility, Milk Production and Composition in Dairy Cows.”
In her dissertation, Dr. Dewi Ratih Ayu Daning presented research results on the potential of essential oil derived from galangal rhizome in reducing pathogenic microbial activity, NH3 and CH4 levels in the rumen of dairy cows, as well as the increase in Ruminococcus bacteria and propionate levels, despite the pH and microbial protein levels remaining unchanged. The research proved an increase in total unsaturated fatty acids in the rumen. The study was conducted on dairy cows treated with 2.5 ml of essential oil per head per day for 30 days, which increased the linoleic acid content in milk without affecting the consumption, nutrient digestibility, production, and composition of the milk produced by the cows.
Dr. Dewi Ratih Ayu Daning, a lecturer at the Agricultural Development Polytechnic in Malang, officially earned her doctorate as the 5780th graduate from Universitas Gadjah Mada and the 151st at the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, with a Cumlaude distinction and a GPA of 3.99. Completing her doctoral studies in the fastest time of 3 years and 6 months, Dr. Dewi Ratih Ayu Daning has achieved a notable accomplishment. (Graduate Academic/Atika)
