As the culmination of the 54th Anniversary activities, Faculty of Animal Science UGM held an Open Senate Meeting on Friday, November 10, 2023 to coincide with the anniversary of the Faculty which was established in 1969. As the culmination of a series of anniversary activities, the Open Senate Meeting is an agenda where the Dean will present the performance that has been carried out over the past year and the achievements that have been achieved as a form of accountability in terms of information disclosure.
As the youngest Faculty at UGM, the Faculty continues to make significant contributions to both UGM and the wider community. This year, the Faculty commemorates its 54th Anniversary with the theme “Development of Smart Animal Science Technology to Realize National Food Independence”.
The main objectives of implementing a series of activities for the 54th Anniversary of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM are to (1) encourage the academic community to take an active role in building a sustainable and environmentally friendly livestock production system, (2) provide socialization of the development and development of a sustainable livestock production system to support SDGs, (3) provide enthusiasm and motivation for the academic community in the context of socio-economic improvement and recovery after the pandemic, and (4) establish close cooperation between the community, private sector, government, and universities. The series of activities to commemorate the 54th Anniversary of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM include international and national seminars, National Level Scientific Work Competitions, sports competitions, Free Lectures for You Farmers We Serve, New Halal Class 2023, and an Open Senate Meeting as the culmination of a series of activities.
Dean of Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM, Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., in his speech, conveyed the importance of the livestock sector as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “The livestock sector plays an important role in 4 pillars of the 17 pillars of the SDGs, namely the second, third, eighth, and thirteenth pillars of the SDGs. Food security and the development of environmentally friendly livestock systems are important issues in Indonesia,” said Prof. Budi Guntoro.
Prof. Budi added that the social and economic development of animal husbandry and the environment is in line with the 2nd and 3rd goals of the SDGs, namely eliminating hunger, achieving food security and good nutrition, and improving health and welfare with animal protein products. In the economic development pillar, the livestock sector plays a role in providing decent work in line with the 8th goal of the SDGs, and in the environmental development pillar, the development of livestock production systems is needed. In the environmental development pillar, the development of an environmentally friendly and sustainable livestock production system is needed to be in line with the 13th goal of the SDGs.
Also attending the event to give a speech was UGM Rector, Prof. Dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp.OG(K), Ph.D. “Animal Husbandry as one of the supporting sectors in the field of food security, makes the Faculty of Animal Science UGM has a challenge to develop an advanced livestock system, produce quality products to ensure nutritional availability, while still paying attention to environmental concerns and sustainability. Efforts to achieve national food security must also continue,” said Prof. Ova Emilia.
Furthermore, Prof. Ova Emilia said that as an academic, there are 4 things that can be done by the Faculty. The first is to prepare superior and innovative human resources. The second is to develop interdisciplinary research as an effort to increase innovative and adaptive technology discovery. The fourth is to participate in the development of livestock MSMEs as animal protein suppliers. The fourth is to cooperate with various sectors and partners at the national and international levels.
In this event there was also a scientific oration delivered by Assoc. Prof. MV. Dr. Ivona Foitova from Masaryk University, Czech Republic, who talked about her research. In addition to scientific oration, awards were also given to cooperation partners of Faculty of Animal Science UGM, namely Maejo University as a partner in academic and student exchange, and Global Food Partners (GFP) as a partner in the development and implementation of cage free chicken management training at the International Training for Cage Free Innovation and Welfare Hub in Kalijeruk, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The award for Inspirational Alumni was given to Ir. Jenny Soelistiani, MM, IPU, ASEAN Eng. as one of the activists and activators of egg farmers in Lampung.
The event continued with the soft launching of livestock products produced by lecturers of Faculty of Animal Science UGM. The products launched include Immunobooster Concentrate invented by Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN Eng.; Goat Skin Collagen and Gelatin with the trademark Genaglow invented by Prof. Ir. Yuny Erwanto, SPt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM.; low-fat milk with the trademark Lowkol invented by Prof. Widodo, SP., M.Sc., Ph.D.; and Fapet Fertilizer invented and produced by the Livestock Development Center (PPT) of the Faculty.
