In 2020, Indonesia is predicted to become the 12th country with the largest economic power in the world and in 2030 will be in the 7th rank. In 2017, the needs of live broiler chickens per day reached 8,701,508 and the day old chicks requirement per week reached 64,116,379.
Seeing this opportunity, it is important for the FAS UGM students to build a mental attitude of entrepreneurship in order to welcome global competition. This was revealed by Ir. Achmad Dawami, alumni of FAS UGM when delivering a presentation to participants of the New Student Successful Learning Training (abbreviated as PPSMB) FAS UGM. According to him, there are several steps that students can take to achieve success.
“According to a study conducted by Hardvard University, success is determined by 85% of characters and 15% of intelligence. Based on personal experience, what more needed is soft skills consisting of emotional intelligence, personality, good communication, and active listeners. The theory only contributes for 15%, with a focus on practice,” explained the alumnus who now serves as the Senior Vice President of PT Ciomas Adisatwa.
Ir. Achmad Dawami added, knowledge, skills, and self-attitude would bring competence. “Good understanding, training, and habits will shape characters that will ultimately lead to success. Meanwhile, if you just understand it, you will quickly forget and eventually fail, “said the alumnus who graduated in 1980.
Dean of FAS UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU who was also the guest speaker at the event said that in order to face the challenges of globalization, urbanization, global warming, food sufficiency, and economic inequality, there were several things that students could prepare.
“To be a successful person, it takes 40% intelligence in academic terms, 30% managerial/organizational skills, and 30% empathy for social problems,” the Dean said. Animal science scholars must have competencies, including being able to communicate in writing, be able to work in teams, master the science and technology, be able to think logically, be able to communicate orally, be able to work independently, and be able to think analytically.
Andromeda Sindoro, S.Pt., FAS UGM alumnus student year 2006 who also delivered a presentation at the event said that animal science graduates are encouraged to become entrepreneurs. Animal science graduates play an important role in realizing milk self-sufficiency in 2020. “Why must we import the milk if we have abundant land and natural resources, fertile soil, and abundant human resources too,” said the owner of Sweet Ice Cream Ice Sundae.
