Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM officially opens a new study programme, namely Livestock Engineer Profession. The new study programme has been accredited by the National Agency for University Accreditation (BAN-PT). It is established to produce qualified and professional engineers in animal husbandry sector.
Dean of Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPM., said the establishment of the engineer profession study programme is a strategic step to prepare human resource in livestock engineering sector.
Such programme is the first in Indonesia and has been accredited. If most of engineering study programs are under the Faculty of Engineering, this programme is the only one which is under the Faculty of Animal Sciences.
“We do not include in Faculty of Engineering because scientifically, we are different from mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering and so forth. Animal science is related to living things and its industry,” said Ali Agus at Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM on Wednesday (20/11) during the opening of the new study programme.
Looking at the development of animal husbandry, according to Ali Agus, its processing, packaging, engineering technology, until food security all requires attention. The new study programme is expected to help the management of those.
The Chairman of the Livestock Engineer Study Programme, Prof. Dr. Ir. Zuprizal, DEA., IPM., said the study programme establishment is a follow-up to Law Number 11 in 2014 regarding engineering.
“There are two paths in the engineer profession programme, those are Past Experience Recognition and Regular paths,” said Zuprizal.
The Past Experience Recognition is applied for those who already have Engineer titles and 5 years of work experience. The participants do not attend classes but make a portfolio that will be validated by UGM.
Meanwhile, the Regular one requires the prospective students to have work experience for 2 years. Instead of teaching the fundamental theories, the regular path will provide courses regarding livestock industry.
“The first registration for Past Experience Recognition for lecturers at Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM will be opened from December 1 until 29, 2017,” he added.
Zuprizal further said the Regular class consists of 24 credits with the 70% of study proportion for industrial practice and 30% for professionalism ethical code and engineering work safety. The graduates of the study programme will be recognized at the 7 level in National Qualification.
“Fresh graduates who are accepted as government employees can directly be placed at the 7 level while the companies who accept the fresh graduates of this study programme will obtain guarantee on the quality of the workforces,” said Zuprizal.
By registering and attending the study programme, Zuprizal said, the new graduates will obtain Engineer title from UGM while their professionalism has to be tested by the Association of Indonesian Engineers (PII).
“The engineer certificate which is issued by the Association of Indonesian Engineers can be used at international level, thus the fresh graduates will be able to compete in ASEAN Economic Community,” he added.
