Three Animal Sciences students of UGM have won Best of The Best Paper and Presenter titles during Asean Youth Conference (AYC) 2018 held in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday (22/9).

The students are Agung Setia Budi (2014), Nadya Ramadhani Susilo (2015), and Rahmadia Nabil Nurhutomo (2017). They became the best after beating 230 participants from members countries of ASEAN, such as Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, and etc.

The three submitted a paper themed “Industry 4.0 The Application of Animal Feces Briquette for Alternative Electrical Energy Source in Indonesia’s Small Villages”.

Nadya said they chose the theme due to the phenomenon of high methane from animal husbandry waste. The number of cattle in Indonesia in year 2017 was 2,313,941 that produced as high as 32,564 million tonnes of CO2 per year, or equal with 51% greenhouse glass emission per year around the world.

“Use of animal faeces that is made into briquette for alternative electricity energy can minimise the methane gas,” she said on Monday (1/10) at UGM.

Nadya said the calories produced by 4 kg of waste briquette equals 10,64 kg of coal. So, this is much more efficient to be used as power generation compared to coal energy.

It is also easier to mobilise briquette than biogas, hence easier distribution to small villages. This is expected to be alternative solution to them. At present there are as many as 12,659 villages in the country of the total 74,759 that are not electrified.

Nadya said the innovation was closely related to Industry 4.0 because electricity was the basic thing to support such industry. To achieve this goal, cooperation is needed between government, breeders, and academicians.
