As many as four students from the Faculty of Animal Science of Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM) joined a training program under an Erasmus+ CBHE program entitled “Enhancing Sustainable and Green Leather Technology in Indonesia (ELEGTEC).” They were Aura Zahwa Syaira from the master program and Imani Fathi Sakinah, Muhammad Azfa Ramadhan, and Muhammad Maulana Bima Sakti from the bachelor program.
These four students would join a 1.5 months training program. The training was started from June 14th through July 27th 2025. The training locations were in Izmir (Turkiye), Athens (Greece), and Pisa (Italy), with a two week period in each country. “During the internship the students are going to receive both theories and practices in environmentally friendly leather tanning process and circular economics on leather industries,” explained one of the project team’s representatives, Dr. Ir. Mohammad Zainal Abidin, S.Pt., M.Biotech., IPM., on Thursday, June 12th.
Zainal explained that this internship program is the first to be done. Other than Fapet UGM, the interns were four students coming from universities in partnership with ELEGTEC, that is Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Makassar and Universitas Mataram (UNRAM), Mataram.
“Next year’s scheme will change. That is from European partners that would come to Indonesia,” adds Zainal.
ELEGTEC is a prestigious project funded by the Erasmus+ CBHE and is managed by Fapet UGM. This project aim to enhanced skills and knowledge of academicians, practitioners, and industries in supporting the sustainability of Indonesian leather industry. Some Indonesian partners in this project includes UNHAS, UNRAM, Center of Standardization and Services in Leather, Rubber, and Plastic Industries (BBSPJIKKP), a subsidiary of Center of Leather, Rubber, and Plastic (BBKKP), and the Association of Indonesian Tanners (APKI).
The Vice Dean of Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, Ir. Andriyani Astuti, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN Eng., hoped that during the training the students could gain knowledge and experiences as much as possible. “Do not forget to keep the good reputation of UGM and the state,” said Andriyani.
