A master’s student from the Faculty of Animal Science in UGM has once again achieved distinction on the international stage. Dimas Fakhruddin, S.Pt., received both a Student Travel Award and a Certificate of Excellence at the prestigious 2025 Pacific Rim Scientific Conference, organized by the Poultry Science Association and held from October 13 to 16, 2025, in Macau, China.
During the Student Competition session focused on “Metabolism and Nutrition: General Nutrition”, Dimas presented his research findings titled “Fermented Palm Kernel Meal Modulates Gut Barrier and Inflammatory Gene Expression via Short-Chain Fatty Acid Production in Broilers”.
“This research focuses on the utilization of fermented palm kernel meal to improve gut performance in broilers,” said Dimas on Thursday (16/10).
According to him, the fermentation of palm kernel cake boosts the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), compounds generated through bacterial fermentation in the broiler’s digestive tract. SCFA production is linked to the expression of genes involved in intestinal barrier function and inflammation in broilers. Dimas conducted this research under the guidance of Dr. Muhsin Al Anas and Dr. Asih Kurniawati. His participation in this conference and competition demonstrates that research from the Faculty of Animal Science in UGM is globally competitive and recognized.
During the conference, Dimas actively participated in various poultry symposia featuring world-renowned scientists and visited poster exhibitions showcasing the latest research findings from universities around the globe. He also attended a “travel award meeting”, a forum designed to bring together award recipients from various international universities to foster collaboration and exchange ideas regarding sustainable poultry farming.
The conference served as a vital forum for professional networking. Dimas had the opportunity to meet and engage in discussions with poultry scientists across various fields, including Metabolism and Nutrition, Microbiology and Physiology, Poultry Management, and Waste and Well-Being. Furthermore, he interacted with stakeholders from leading industry sectors. These interactions are expected to help bridge the gap between UGM’s academic community and the practical needs of the livestock industry.
This achievement demonstrates the tangible contribution of UGM students to the advancement of science and technology. Dimas hopes this experience will inspire other UGM students to seize international opportunities and continue contributing to the progress of animal science.
