The Takmir of Nurul Fikri Mosque at the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM), held its monthly Islamic study session on Thursday (9/4), featuring Ustaz Syatori Abdulrauf as the speaker. Centered on the theme “Stepping Away from the Noise of the World”, the session invited participants to reflect on the direction of their lives, which are often consumed by the distractions and busyness of worldly pursuits.
In his session, Ustaz Syatori emphasized the importance of cultivating an awareness of the Hereafter in everyday life. He explained that the quality of a person’s life is largely shaped by the mindset and values that dominate their heart.
“If our lives are filled only with worldly concerns, then our happiness is limited to worldly pleasures, and our hardships become nothing more than worldly suffering. But when we live with an awareness of the Hereafter, we can find meaning and contentment regardless of our circumstances,” he said.
He also noted that many people today have gradually lost their awareness of the Hereafter. In reality, he explained, human beings are not creatures of this world but creatures of the Hereafter who are merely passing through worldly life. This world is only a temporary stop before returning to eternal life.
“For a long time, our awareness of the Hereafter has faded from our lives. Yet we do not truly belong to this world—we belong to the Hereafter and are only travelers here. One day, we will all return home,” he emphasized.
Addressing the realities of modern life, Ustaz Syatori observed that inner conflict often arises from the tension between the ego and one’s higher self. When people become overly attached to worldly desires, they drift further away from inner peace. On the other hand, nurturing an awareness of the Hereafter enables them to live with greater tranquility and a deeper sense of purpose.
He also reminded the congregation of the importance of maintaining the right perspective while living in this world. People should not become so captivated by worldly pleasures that they lose sight of their ultimate destination.
“Living with an awareness of the Hereafter is not optional—it is essential. As we journey through this world, we must preserve that awareness and not become so absorbed in worldly enjoyment that we forget where we truly belong,” he advised.
Concluding his session, Ustaz Syatori stressed that the key to a peaceful life lies in gratitude and patience. Whatever circumstances people face, they should remain grateful to God.
“In life, we have only two choices: to be grateful or to be patient. If we can uphold both, God willing, our lives will become more peaceful and fulfilling,” he concluded.
