Since 2015, Faculty of Animal Sciences UGM has established cooperation with developers of grass seed and legume, Cropmark Seed Company New Zealand.

After testing 30 grass seed and legume from Cropmark New Zealand, the Faculty has selected 3 potential types that are adaptive to Indonesia’s agroecology condition. One of them is forbs Chicory.

Chicory is a type of forbs, herbaceous feed that is often found in grazing pastures. The plant is important to increase productivity of pastures. The research done by the Faculty found that Chicory Intybus was potential in Indonesia as the production may reach 2—3 times of its origin country. read more

To answer the needs of quality grass for farmers, the Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM and Perserikatan Peternak Kambing dan Domba Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Goat and Sheep Breeder Association) developed research on Napier Grass (Pennisetum Purpureum) in several locations in Yogyakarta and Central Java.

“This research is very important to do because farmers need grass that has the ability to grow faster, contain more biomass and adequate nutrition. This research was conducted to determine the adaptability of Napier Grass planted in several regions,” said Dean of FAS UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM student, Muhammad Khoerul Fadhli (student batch 2015) and Annisa Erlina Yuliani (student batch 2016), presented a paper entitled “Industry 4.0: Be a Good Entrepreneur with the Best Skills” in The International Student Science Forum 2018, in Ho City Chi Minh, Vietnam, on December 5, 2018.

“After going through the selection process, our paper was chosen to be presented at the forum. Our paper discusses entrepreneurs as the most important subject in developing a nation. Indonesia’s young generation is 24.5% of the total population of 252 million. The ornamental chicken business of student of Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) UGM, Mino Farm, won 1^st place in the innovative product category at the UGM Character Festival 2018 on November 24, 2018. The three students run the business were Akhmad Arif Sulthoni (student batch 2017), Muhammad Hafidzuddin Tsabit (student batch 2015), and Hutomo Abdurrohman (class of 2015). All three are part of the UGM Entrepreneurial Student Program.

“We chose this ornamental chicken business because of the increasing market needs. Beautiful color patterns make ornamental chickens getting more popular with ornamental chicken lovers. In addition, the knowledge of imported ornamental chickens is not yet known by the public,” said Akhmad Arif Sulthoni or familiarly called Arif, when contacted on Friday (14/12) at the FAS Campus. read more

Innovation and collaboration are two important things in entrepreneurship. The innovation that is needed is one that is able to answer the problems of the community and not necessarily something sophisticated.

“The key is to create products that are relevant and customer-driven.
