First of its kind in Indonesia and Southeast Asia , Hub consists of an international training centre & model farm for cage-free egg production and management

A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on 7 June in Kalijeruk, Yogyakarta, Indonesia to celebrate the commencement of the building of the Hub. As the 7th largest egg producer in the world, Indonesian farmers are seeking support in cage-free production, in order to stay competitive and meet the increasing demand for cage-free eggs in Indonesia and across Asia. GFP’s recent producer needs assessment survey found that egg farmers in Indonesia need support from experts on how to transition from conventional cage systems to cage-free production, with higher levels of welfare. The Hub will allow egg farmers to achieve this long-term success, sustainability, and profitability in cage-free egg production.

The Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) shows a strong concern and interest in pursuing animal welfare through learning and research programs.

As a follow-up to the signing of the cooperation between Global Food Partners (GFP), UGM and Aeres in 2021, the Cage-free Innovation and Welfare Hub is being built in Kalijeruk, Yogyakarta. The cage-free system being built is a hybrid closed house for 3000 laying hens.

“Our cage-free training centre and model farm will be the first in Indonesia and Asia. The Hub will bring together egg producers and other industry stakeholders to improve the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the egg industry in Indonesia and across Asia. It will provide practical training in best practices in cage-free management and production, serve as a model farm for cage-free producers, and as a research and development center. ” said Nuggehalli Jayasimha, COO and Co-Founder of Global Food Partners.  Also present at the Groundbreaking for the Construction of the Training Center in Kalijeruk were a number of important guests from the Sleman Regency Government and local village officials. This Training Center will involve the livestock industry in its establishment.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng. recognized the cooperation of various parties involved in the construction of this training center. “We look forward to hosting this training centre, which will serve as a key learning tool for cage-free egg production for the community, especially students, lecturers, researchers, farmers, and industry, not only from Indonesia but also from abroad.

GFP and Aeres provide technical and operational support for the cage-free model farm and training centre, using the the best equipment, technology, and experts. The Faculty of Animal Science is optimistic that the centre will serve as a localised model for  cage-free production one that can be replicated by local farmers in Indonesia and throughout the region.
