Jogjainside.com, Yogyakarta – Honeybees have been known to have enormous benefits for human health.

According to research the content of bee sting poison and propolis produced by bees can be used for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria therapy.

However, the current forest fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra have caused honey production in Indonesia to decline.

This decline in production was revealed in the Beekeeping National Seminar “Optimizing the Role of Tropical Bees and Its Products to Improve Food Security and Public Health”.

The seminar was initiated by the Faculty of Animal Science UGM on Wednesday 25/9, the framework of the Lustrum X Faculty of Animal Science UGM Yogyakarta.

IMashud, Secretary-General of the Indonesian Beekeeping Association explained, with the forest and land fires that occurred in Sumatra and Kalimantan impacted the destruction of the forest honeybees in the area.

“Production of homeland honey, which is still partly obtained from wild honey bees, is certain to decrease drastically. National honey production is still 10,000 tons, far behind China which reached 200 thousand tons,” Mashud said.

Soesilowati Hadisoesilo, a beekeeping expert at the Faculty of Forestry UGM, said that conservation and cultivation efforts are one of the ways that can be taken to solve this problem.

He explained that 9 types of honey bees can be cultivated. They are Apis andreniformis, Apis florea, Apis dorsata, Apis laboriosa, Apis mellifera, Apis koschevnikovi, Apis nuluensis, Apis cerana, and Apis nigrocincta.

“Six of them are found in Indonesia both as native and introduced bees. Currently, honey bees are growing rapidly without sting or bee stingles which also consist of various types, “he said. (sug)
