Faculty of Animal Science UGM Livestock Development Center Introduces Farm Tourism Holiday

The Livestock Development Center (Pusat Pengembangan Ternak, or PPT) of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM) introduced the Farm Tourism Holiday program in mid-2026 as an educational livestock experience for children. Ir. Tian Jihadhan Wankar, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPP., Head of the Fapet UGM Livestock Development Center, said that the program had been held twice, on June 13 and July 11, 2026.

“Going forward, Farm Tourism Holiday will be held regularly once a month on Saturdays, adopting a learning-by-doing concept,” Tian said on Tuesday (21/7).

He added that the program was introduced in response to growing public interest, particularly among parents who want to take their children to visit a farm independently rather than waiting for school-organized visits.

During each session, participants are not only taken on a farm tour but also introduced to various aspects of animal science, including the types of livestock at Fapet UGM, the benefits of livestock farming in everyday life, livestock products such as milk and eggs, and the importance of treating animals properly through animal welfare principles. The educational sessions are complemented by hands-on activities, including milking goats, feeding livestock, interacting with rabbits, sheep shearing, horseback riding, and creative activities.

Farm Tourism Holiday has received an enthusiastic response from the public. Registration is conducted online through a Google Form announced on the Instagram account @ppt.fapetugm. Each session accommodates approximately 20–30 participants to ensure an interactive learning experience and allow each child to gain the most from the activities. Due to high demand, registration quotas are often filled quickly, prompting PPT to limit the number of participants for each session.

Unlike school group visits, Farm Tourism Holiday is specifically designed to provide children with a more in-depth learning experience. PPT prepares a structured activity flow, assigns guides to each group, ensures safety during interactions with livestock, and provides educational materials tailored to the participants’ age groups.

Through Farm Tourism Holiday, PPT Fapet UGM hopes to provide children with an enjoyable learning experience while fostering an early appreciation for the world of animal science and livestock farming.
