The Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM) has expressed readiness to actively support the downstreaming of research and innovation initiatives led by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia. This commitment was demonstrated through the participation of Fapet UGM leadership in a meeting between Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman and UGM’s agro-cluster academic community, held in Jakarta on Monday (29/6).
Fapet UGM was represented by Dean Prof. Budi Guntoro; Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Partnerships Prof. Yuny Erwanto; Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Nafi’atul Umami; as well as Prof. Panjono, Prof. Bambang Suwignyo, and Prof. Dyah Maharani. The meeting, attended by UGM’s rector, deans, professors, researchers, lecturers, and students, served as a platform to strengthen synergy between higher education institutions and the government in accelerating innovation in the agriculture and livestock sectors toward sustainable food self-sufficiency.
Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration among universities, the government, and the private sector to ensure that research findings can be widely implemented and deliver tangible benefits to society. He also encouraged higher education institutions to strengthen research downstreaming so that innovations do not stop at scientific publications but can instead improve the productivity and welfare of farmers and livestock producers.
Responding to this, Dean of Fapet UGM Prof. Budi Guntoro stated that Fapet UGM is highly open to strengthening collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, particularly in research, innovation, and the application of technology in the livestock sector. According to him, Fapet UGM has various innovations that are ready for further development to address community needs and support the advancement of Indonesia’s livestock sector, including Gama Cattle, Gama Umami grass, alfalfa feed, local chicken, and other livestock products with potential for downstream development.
He added that synergy between universities and the government is essential to accelerating the development of innovations that are applicable, responsive to field needs, and capable of improving the competitiveness of Indonesia’s livestock sector. With its research capacity and academic resources, Fapet UGM is optimistic that it can play a strategic role in supporting the government’s vision of sustainable food self-sufficiency.
