The world today is abuzz with the term “global boiling” due to the drastic increase in average temperatures in various parts of the world. Methane emissions are one of the causes of global boiling. The Global Monitoring Laboratory states that methane emissions have been rising since 1980, from 1,620 ppb to 1,933.46 ppb in October 2023. These emissions have the potential to increase global temperatures 28 times more than CO2. About 20-25% of total methane emissions come from livestock activities, specifically through enteric fermentation in the rumen of livestock, which produces methane gas that is then released through feces and burping. read more

International students from various universities around the world participated in the Asian Agricultural Association of College and University (AAACU) Summer Enrichment Program and the 8th Summer Course Program on Harmony in Animal and Agricultural Production for Global Food Security from July 21 to August 3, 2024, at the Faculty of Animal Science UGM.

The participants hailed from the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, India, and Pakistan.

In his opening remarks, the Dean Faculty of Animal ScienceUGM, Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., stated that the theme of the program highlights innovative strategies, technologies, and best practices aligned with livestock production, environmental conservation, and sustainable food systems. read more

Hastomo Nur Hidayatulloh, student 0f Faculty of Animal Science UGM, received the Charoen Pokphand Best Student Appreciation (CPBSA) award. CPBSA is a scholarship program from PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia (CPI), awarded to final-year students from various disciplines and universities in Indonesia through a rigorous selection process.

Hastomo explained that the program’s participants comprised 21 students from 16 universities. The series of activities began on May 13 and continued until July 22, 2024. read more

A unique innovation from UGM students has created bricks made from cattle manure, especially cow manure. This innovation, named “Batako Bawono,” is the result of a collaboration between Nauziyah Azuardini and Yossi Dyah Listiana (Animal Science and Industry, 2022), Dinda Ramadhan and Zaenal Arif (Veterinary Technology, 2022), and Muhammad Rakan Arrandhi (Civil Infrastructure Management and Maintenance Engineering, 2023), under the supervision of Ir. Annisa’ Qurrotun A’yun, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPP from  Faculty of Animal Science UGM. Five students of Universitas Gadjah Mada are assisting the Mitra Karya Sejahtera Disability Empowerment Group (KPD) in Gunungkidul with stingless bee farming. This initiative aims to tackle unemployment caused by low self-esteem and limited job accessibility for the disabled community. Stingless bee farming is well-suited for the KPD Mitra Karya Sejahtera as it requires low investment, minimal physical activity, and is safe for people with disabilities.

The group of students participating in this Student Creativity Program (PKM) are from Faculty of Animal Science: Aliya Rahmawati Nurkhasanah, Desta Lovefiyana Nurpita, and Satriya Putra Pratama. They joined with Muhammad Fahmi Rafsanjani from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences  UGM and Paras Ardina Aya Shopya from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM. The team is supervised by Moh. Sofi’ul Anam, S.Pt., M.Sc., lecturer from Faculty of Animal Science UGM. Recognizing the importance of empowering the disabled to enhance their skills and support their income sources, the team not only provides assistance but also trains the participants in stingless bee farming, specifically with the klanceng bee (Trigona sp.). read more
