The Faculty of Animal Science in UGM Encourages Independent Waste Management Practices Through a Circular Economy Approach

The Faculty of Animal Science in UGM held a Waste Management Workshop: Community-Driven Waste Management and Circular Economy in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, December 10ᵗʰ, 2025. This activity is part of the CircuLife–SLI 2025 program, which focuses on community-based waste management and a circular economy.

The Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science, Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., in his remarks emphasized that this waste management program aligns with the goals of UGM’s Health Promoting University (HPU).

“We are concerned to see that only around 40% of the waste in Yogyakarta can be processed and reused,” Budi explained.

Echoing the Dean, Irawan, S.IP., Head of Triharjo, Sleman, stated that waste management is a shared responsibility, not just an individual one. However, he acknowledged that the community is not yet fully aware of this.

“Sanctions have been imposed in our area. Yesterday, only one resident of Triharjo intentionally dumped trash; the other four were from outside the area,” said Irawan.

Learning from Panggungharjo Village’s Success in Waste Management

In the first workshop session, the Head of Panggungharjo Village, Ari Suryanto, S.E., introduced the communal waste management model through the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes), a good practice that has become a national reference.

He explained that Panggungharjo Village began building a responsible waste management system in 2013 with five pillars: political infrastructure, social infrastructure, economic infrastructure, technological infrastructure, and knowledge transfer through the establishment of the Urban Waste Management Education Center.

“Since 2013, Panggungharjo Village has been able to process organic waste, residue, used cooking oil, and even scrap. The sorting system is a key source of this village’s success,” explained Ari.

Meanwhile, the second session was delivered by the Faculty of Animal Science’s lecturer, Dr. Viagian Pastawan. He explained the importance of organic waste processing to prevent environmental pollution, especially since excess nitrogen can be absorbed into the ground or surface water.
