The Faculty of Animal Science in UGM held a Poultry Farming Discussion Forum on Saturday (22/11) at the drh. R. Soepardjo Auditorium. This event brought together academics, practitioners, professional organizations, government officials, and civil society to discuss the theme “National Poultry Farming Transformation: Optimizing 20 Trillion Rupiah Funds Towards Food Independence”.
The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., said the workshop was attended by 125 participants from various backgrounds, ranging from farmers, bureaucrats, academics, and poultry industry players. The goal of the workshop was to identify opportunities from the budget-based chicken farming integration plan and to unravel the structural challenges that the government and industry need to anticipate.
“We also hope to receive constructive recommendations for policy, investment, and strengthening farmer institutions. This also aims to encourage collaboration between academics, government, industry, and farmers,” explained Budi Guntoro.
The workshop featured the Director General of Animal Science and Animal Health at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. drh. Agung Suganda, who outlined the direction of national policy regarding the utilization of the IDR 20 trillion budget to support the integration and modernization of the poultry sector. Agung emphasized the importance of balancing supply and demand, strengthening the animal health system, and developing an integrated poultry ecosystem across Indonesia’s regions.
Multi-Stakeholder Panel Discussion
The workshop continued with a panel discussion featuring six key figures from the national poultry industry: the President Director of BUMN ID Food, the President Director of BUMN Berdikari, the Chairman of GPPU, the Chairman of GPMT, the Chairman of GOPAN, and the Chairman of PPN.
The speakers discussed various strategic issues, including strengthening the national poultry ecosystem through synergy between BUMN, the private sector, and farmers, the development of poultry production centers outside Java, the challenges of the feed and breeding industry in facing raw material price volatility, a fairer partnership model for smallholder farmers, and the role of technology and digitalization in increasing productivity and efficiency.
In addition to mapping opportunities from national poultry integration, participants identified potential risks, including gaps in access to SAPRONAK (an agricultural product processing unit), limited bargaining power for smallholder farmers, and the need to strengthen farmer institutions to adapt to industrial transformation.
Through this forum, the Faculty of Animal Science in UGM hopes to generate strategic recommendations for the government, state-owned enterprises, industry, and farmer organizations to realize an inclusive, efficient, and highly competitive national poultry sector.
