A student team from the Faculty of Animal Science in UGM once again achieved impressive success through their participation in the Terranova 2.0: Essay and Poster Competition, organized by the Environmental Engineering Student Association of UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta, on Sunday (16/11). This national-level competition, with the theme “Sparking Sustainable Change: Youth and the Future of Energy & Minerals”, attracted hundreds of students from various universities across Indonesia.
In this prestigious competition, the UGM team, consisting of Dini Aruni Karunia Romadhoni, Revalda Stefani Danela, and Batista Varani Bravinda Bintasani, successfully advanced their scientific paper, “EcoShell Edible Smart Film: Implementation of Natural Mineral CaCO₃ from Eggshell Waste as a Smart Material for Food Spoilage Markers Based on Renewable Energy”, to the full paper stage after passing a national abstract selection. This work is based on the issues of the energy crisis, high plastic consumption, exploitation of mining minerals, and the urgency of transitioning to sustainable materials.
“This achievement is the result of our hard work and enthusiasm for learning since the initial idea was conceived. We are very grateful to be able to bring a good name to UGM and hope that EcoShell can continue to be developed until it truly benefits industry and society,” she said on Tuesday (18/11).
The UGM team also won third place in the Terranova 2.0 Essay Category. EcoShell, featuring the concept of a smart bioplastic based on organic waste, uses CaCO₃ from eggshells, corn cob starch, and anthocyanin from purple yam tubers as a pH indicator. This combination of materials produces an environmentally friendly film that can detect food spoilage through color changes, while also supporting a circular economy and reducing the exploitation of conventional mining minerals.
