The Faculty of Animal Science in UGM, through its Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP), once again held a social service event to mark the Faculty’s 56ᵗʰ anniversary. The event took place on Wednesday (12/11) at the Ki Hajar Dewantara Islamic Boarding School, located within the Taman Siswa school complex in Ngempak, Sleman. This initiative reflects the academic community’s commitment to the educational sector, specifically by supporting the learning process and fostering self-reliance among the younger generation in the fields of agriculture and animal husbandry.
The Ki Hajar Dewantara Islamic Boarding School is situated on a land owned by the Taman Siswa School and accommodates approximately 40 santri (students at an Islamic boarding school) as well as 30 Taman Siswa junior and senior high school students, all guided by 12 teachers and 5 boarding school administrators. The school provides free education to underprivileged students and strives to cultivate a spirit of self-reliance through agricultural and livestock-related activities.
For this year’s social service event, a cash donation package contributed by various donors was distributed alongside gift packages from sponsors. These packages included fresh chicken from PT Ciomas Adisatwa, table eggs from PT Japfa Comfeed Tbk, all-purpose seasoned flour from PT Mulia Inti Pangan, pasteurized milk and cage-free eggs from the Faculty of Animal Science in UGM’s Livestock Development Center, as well as dairy products and snacks from Savoria Group.
“We distributed cash donations and approximately 160 gift packages,” explained Sri Hastuti, S.Pt., M.P., a representative of the DWP in the Faculty of Animal Science.
All donations and gift packages were distributed to students from the Islamic boarding school, students from Taman Siswa Junior and Senior High Schools, teachers, and boarding school administrators. In addition to the donation handover, the event featured educational sessions and practical training on poultry farming. Dr. Heru Sasongko presented a session on the basics of chicken egg incubation, while Fauzan Rifqi Giska Putra, S.Pt., covered the topic of making simple chicken feed.
Additionally, the Poultry Science Laboratory assistant team from the Faculty participated by introducing manual incubators to the students. This activity provided participants with the opportunity to learn firsthand about the egg incubation process through a simple and practical approach.
Through this initiative, the Faculty aims to provide education, inspiration, and tangible support to the younger generation, fostering greater familiarity with and interest in the agriculture and animal husbandry sectors: fields that are vital and hold the potential to create sustainable economic opportunities.
The Dharma Wanita Persatuan of the Faculty of Animal Science is also committed to strengthening synergy among academia, industry, and the community, while cultivating a spirit of social responsibility within the campus environment.
