The Faculty of Animal Science in UGM’s Community Service Team Assists the Kemiri Pakem Women Farmers Group in Producing High-Quality Ice Cream

The Community Service Team or Tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (Pengabmas) of the Faculty of Animal Science in UGM, led by Prof. Nurliyani, conducted a dissemination activity on dairy processing technology in Kemiri, Purwobinangun Village, Pakem District in 2025. This activity, funded by the 2025 Community Service Grant Competition of the Faculty of Animal Science in UGM, aims to strengthen the downstreaming of post-harvest technology in local dairy farming businesses and to create business opportunities based on local potential.

Nurliyani explained that Kemiri and its surrounding areas have two active livestock groups: the Ngepring Group, which produces goat’s milk, and the Kemiri Group, which focuses on cow’s milk.

“This potential is an important foundation for developing a high-quality and competitive dairy processing industry,” explained Nurliyani on Monday (8/12).

Previously, assistance with ice cream production was provided, but the resulting product did not meet market standards, particularly due to its rough texture. Given this situation, this year’s community service program focused on improving post-harvest handling technology, including improving production quality, controlling texture, extending shelf life, and diversifying dairy products.

“The milk potential in Kemiri is enormous, but it needs to be supported by the right technology to produce products with stable quality and marketable value,” he explained.

The community service method was implemented in stages and applied, starting with outreach, milk processing counseling and demonstrations, production process assistance, packaging and labeling training, and evaluation. This activity was also supported by UII students who were conducting activities at the same location, thus strengthening the smooth running of the field practice.

The activity evaluation showed encouraging results. The Kemiri Women Farmers Group, or Kelompok Wanita Rani (KWT), is now able to produce ice cream in various flavors with smooth quality, good texture, and marketable quality. This capability is an indicator of successful processing skills improvement, while also expanding income opportunities through diversified dairy products.

Through this technology dissemination, the Faculty of Animal Science hopes that downstream technology can continue to boost farmer productivity, produce value-added products, and contribute to improving the group’s welfare. Going forward, business strengthening is planned through the development of product variants, consistent quality control, and targeted marketing strategies to increase the competitiveness of local Kemiri ice cream.

In addition to Nurliyani, other members of the Faculty’s community service team include Prof. Ir. Yustina Yuni Suranindyah, MS., Ph.D., IPM., Dr. Ir. Mohammad Zainal Abidin, S.Pt., M.Biotech., IPM., Dr. Ir. Rio Olympias Sujarwanta, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN Eng.., Endang Wahyuni, S.Pt., M. Biotech. (S3) and Satyaguna Rakhmatulloh, M.Sc (S3).
