The Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM) is in mourning. One of its most distinguished professors, Prof. drh. Wartomo Hardjosubroto, MSA, passed away on Sunday (22/2). The late academic, widely known as the “Father of Indonesian Animal Breeding,” died at the age of 90 and was laid to rest at the UGM Sawitsari Cemetery on Sunday (22/2) afternoon.
Prof. Wartomo was a retired lecturer at the Laboratory of Genetics and Animal Breeding, Department of Animal Breeding and Reproduction, the Faculty of Animal Science UGM. Throughout his lifetime, he was recognized as a highly dedicated academic in the development of genetics and animal breeding science in Indonesia.
He was born in Purworejo on July 6, 1936. His academic career at UGM began in 1963 as a lecturer. Thanks to his consistent contributions to education, research, and community service, he was inaugurated as a full professor in 2001. Over more than 37 years, Prof. Wartomo helped build the scientific and institutional foundations of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM.
In terms of his educational background, Prof. Wartomo completed his veterinary professional education at UGM and pursued his master’s degree at the University of Florida, United States. This academic experience further enriched his perspective and contributions to the development of animal science, particularly in the fields of genetics and animal breeding.
In recognition of his dedication and service, he received the Purnabakti (Retirement Service) Award from UGM in 2006. He was also known as warmhearted and a role model for countless professors and students across multiple generations.
The entire chair, lecturers, administrative staff, students, and alumni of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM extend their deepest condolences over the passing of the late professor.
