The Awassi is the most common sheep breed in the Middle East and the only indigenous breed in Jordan. Raised for meat, milk, and wool production, the Awassi has spread to over 30 countries worldwide. Burja Goat, an industry partner of Polbangtan Malang, imports Awassi sheep and is developing the breed following its introduction to Indonesia.
This development initiative is led by Dr. Dewi Ratih Ayu Daning, S.Pt., M.S., a researcher and the Head of the Livestock Agribusiness Study Program at Polbangtan Malang, under the research project titled “Development of Indigofera Feed for Awassi Sheep”. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Animal Science at UGM, led by Prof. Ir. Yustina Yuni Suryanindiyah, M.S., Ph.D., IPM, is conducting research focused on identifying the livestock characteristics, milk production and composition, and reproductive performance of Awassi sheep and their crosses.
In addition to research, the joint team conducted community service activities with their partner, the Joyo Setinggil livestock farm, on August 9-10, 2025. The program began with presentations on production management, record-keeping, and sheep milk processing, delivered by Prof. Ir. Yustina Yuni Suryanindiyah, M.S., Ph.D., IPM; Prof. Ir. Tety Hartatik, S.Pt., Ph.D., IPM; Prof. Dr. Ir. Nurliyani, M.S., IPM; and Ir. Rochijan, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM. Subsequently, the Livestock Agribusiness Study Program team provided training on business analysis, led by the head of the Socio-Economics Scientific Group, Dr. Siswoyo, and on spice-infused sheep milk processing, led by Ir. Luki Amar H., S.Pt., M.Sc.
“This collaborative research and community service initiative between academia and the industry is a tangible example of an ‘Impactful Campus’. Hopefully, the Awassi sheep will ultimately give profits for the farmers,” said Yuni.
