The Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM) has continued to strengthen the downstreaming of innovation through a research-based and community empowerment program conducted in collaboration with international partners in 2026. Held from April to June 2026, the program was funded by the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) under the EQUITY WCU Program.
Together with Dr. Joseph Dela Cruz from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), the UGM team carried out technology transfer activities with BUMDes Putro Manggolo in Kadilanggon Village, Klaten. The program aims to enhance the capacity to produce high-quality food while strengthening village economic institutions.
Led by Dr. Ir. Muhsin Al Anas, S.Pt., IPP., the program focuses on developing omega-3-rich feed for cage-free laying hens through feed production assistance, the implementation of quality standards, and the application of laboratory research findings at the community level. The initiative is expected to produce higher-quality and more competitive omega-3 eggs.
The UGM team transferred technologies covering feed formulation based on locally available raw materials, quality control and quality assurance systems, as well as integrated cage-free laying hen management, including feeding practices, farm biosecurity, and omega-3 egg marketing.
According to Muhsin Al Anas, higher education institutions have a responsibility to ensure that research findings do not remain confined to laboratories but deliver tangible benefits to communities through continuous assistance and capacity building for village enterprises.
The international collaboration also enriched the implementation of production standards, food safety, animal health, and community-based business development. Throughout the program, BUMDes participants received guidance on feed management, farm biosecurity, and marketing strategies for premium omega-3 eggs.
Beyond improving food product quality, the program is also designed to strengthen the role of BUMDes as drivers of the village economy through human resource development, business system strengthening, and the adoption of sustainable modern production technologies.
The program also involved UGM and UPLB students as part of an experiential learning initiative, facilitating knowledge transfer to the younger generation as future agents of innovation. Moving forward, UGM and its international partners will continue providing assistance to ensure that this innovation-based village economic development model can be replicated in various regions across Indonesia.
