Interest in pursuing higher education at a top university like Universitas Gadjah Mada must be accompanied by a well-considered strategy. One key approach is to carefully examine the selectivity level and quota of each major.
This was conveyed during the campus visit activity held for hundreds of students from MAN 1 Surakarta during their visit to the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM), which took place on Tuesday (10/2).
The Vice Principal for Public Relations of MAN 1 Surakarta, Suharno, S.H.I., said that the visitation to the Faculty was intended to ensure the students have a clear picture of their options before determining which university to choose after graduating.
“We regularly conduct campus visits to help students get ready for college. Therefore, they need to visit and learn directly from top universities like UGM,” he said.
According to him, quite a number of graduates from MAN 1 Surakarta have been accepted at UGM and have enrolled in various faculties. This achievement serves as a strong motivation for the final year students to prepare themselves more seriously.
Ir. Viagian Pastawan, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPP., one of the lecturers from the Faculty of Animal Science who served as the speaker, provided strategic tips to increase students’ chance of getting accepted into UGM—whether through Seleksi Nasional Berbasi Prestasi (National Selection Based on Achievement, or SNBP), Seleksi Nasional Berbasis Tes (National Selection Based on Test, or SNBT), or selection test held by UGM, known as Ujian Mandiri (UM).
“One approach is to examine the quotas and selectivity rates of each major. Don’t base your decision solely on idealism without a solid strategy,” he stated.
He illustrated this by pointing out that if students fail to secure a spot in a highly competitive major through a particular admission pathway, they could explore other majors with lower selectivity levels that still match their interests and capabilities.
Additionally, during the Q&A session, the students appeared enthusiastic and actively asked questions about possible collaboration opportunities available at the Faculty of Animal Science, the amount of Uang Kuliah Tunggal (Single Tuition Fees, or UKT), and possible career prospects.
Furthermore, this campus visit is expected to deepen students’ understanding that securing a place at UGM isn’t solely about achieving high scores, but also about strategy in selecting a major by considering quotas and the level of competition.
