The Faculty of Animal Science at UGM hosted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Tuesday (15/10) regarding the drafting of revisions to the Law on Animal Husbandry and Animal Health (UU PKH). The event was attended by various associations and professional organizations in the fields of animal husbandry and animal health, as well as representatives from academia and industry practitioners from various relevant institutions.
The event opened with remarks from the General Chairman of ISPI (Indonesian Society of Animal Science Professionals), Dr. Ir. H. Audy Joinaldy, S.Pt, M.Sc., M.M., IPU., M.I.P., ASEAN.Eng., who emphasized the importance of synergy among academia, the government, and industry players to produce regulations relevant to the challenges of modern animal husbandry. He noted that various issues regarding livestock management in the country persist, ultimately hindering the achievement of food self-sufficiency.
“We aim to gather input from various associations, with the ultimate goal of advancing the nation’s animal husbandry sector,” Audy stated.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPU, ASEAN Eng., Chair of the PII Animal Science Technical Expertise Board and Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science at UGM, highlighted the urgent need to revise Law No. 41/2014 on Animal Husbandry and Animal Health. “There are still many obstacles in the field. For instance, while the current law addresses ruminant livestock raised for meat, it does not yet cover dairy cattle, pigs, or poultry. Therefore, we must continue to voice these concerns from various sectors, including to the House of Representatives (DPR),” Budi stated.
Following the opening remarks, the event proceeded with a presentation on the draft revision of the Law on Animal Husbandry and Animal Health by Prof. Dr.Sc.Agr., Ir. Suyadi, MS., IPU, ASEAN Eng., who serves as the team leader and is a Professor at the Faculty of Animal Science, Brawijaya University.
Through this Focus Group Discussion (FGD), input, critiques, and recommendations from professional associations and livestock practitioners were gathered to refine the draft revision, ensuring it is better adapted to developments in the industry and technology, as well as to the needs of the public.
This event is expected to serve as a starting point for stakeholder collaboration in developing regulations that support food security, the welfare of livestock farmers, and animal health in Indonesia.
