The Faculty of Animal Science at UGM sent a young faculty member, Ir. Annisa’ Qurrotun A’yun, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPP., to represent UGM at the RI-SING Faculty Immersion Program, held from July 14-16, 2025, at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Wanda Preiser, Head of NTU’s International Cooperation Office, stated that the RI-SING Faculty Immersion Program aims to strengthen interdisciplinary research collaboration with leading universities in Indonesia.
Furthermore, this program is part of INSPIRASI (Indonesia-NTU Singapore Institute of Research for Sustainability and Innovation), a sustainability-focused research and education collaboration between NTU and prominent Indonesian universities, such as UGM, ITB, ITS, and UI, supported by the LPDP and the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.
Ir. Annisa’ Qurrotun A’yun noted that the event further strengthens cooperation opportunities between NTU and UGM regarding the development of research collaborations, teaching initiatives, and institutional facilities for implementing sustainability.
“Sustainability is not merely understood theoretically but can also be applied within the campus environment,” said A’yun.
This activity aligns with the research experience of Ir. Annisa’ Qurrotun A’yun, whose work focuses on applying circular economy and sustainability concepts to the development of smallholder livestock businesses. In her research, she developed an integrated crop-livestock model that efficiently utilizes organic waste to boost productivity and improve the well-being of small-scale farmers. This approach aims to optimize resource use, minimize waste, and support sustainable livestock farming practices applicable within farming communities. Consequently, participation in the RI-SING Faculty Immersion Program is highly relevant, strengthening collaboration on the development of sustainability solutions at a regional level.
This initiative also contributes significantly to sustainable development in Indonesia and the ASEAN region, aligning with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Launched in 2022, this program involved 25 early-career lecturers from leading Indonesian universities participating in intensive academic discussions with experts from NTU. Topics included “Urban Food Security and Sustainability” (presented by Assoc. Prof. Md Saidul Islam), “Research and Program Opportunities in Sustainability: ASEAN Approach” (Prof. Viswanathan S), “Food Resilience: Challenges and Opportunities from a Singaporean Perspective” (Prof. Peter Preiser), and “Food Nutrition and Future-Ready Food Safety Hub” (Prof. Yusuf Ali). Additionally, discussions covered “Sustainable Protein Innovation”, “Ecosystem Resilience”, and “Agricultural Sustainability in Food Research” with various NTU professors and assistant professors, including Assoc. Prof. Tan Lay Poh, Assoc. Prof. Janice Lee, Dr. Shawn Lum, Asst. Prof. Yi Wen Zeng, and Asst. Prof. Pierre Taillardat.
