UGM Faculty of Animal Science Utilizes Drainage and Rainwater for Water Conservation

The Faculty of Animal Science at UGM remains committed to supporting water conservation and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land). One tangible measure being implemented is the utilization of canal water and rainwater, alongside the application of “Reduce-Reuse-Recycle” principles in campus water management.

Nurma Diani Sekarsih, S.Pd., MBA., Head of the Administrative Office (KKA) at the Faculty, explained that this initiative is part of a strategy for sustainable natural resource management.

“We strive to maximize the potential of natural resources, particularly those in the vicinity of the campus, including the use of canal water and rainwater. This approach not only supports water conservation but also enhances energy efficiency and reduces reliance on groundwater sources,” Nurma stated on Monday (29/9).

She explained that water flowing from the Mataram Canal is utilized to maintain the vegetation surrounding the Faculty. This initiative has proven effective in curbing the use of clean water supplies while simultaneously lowering electricity consumption by reducing the need to rely heavily on water pumps.

Furthermore, the Faculty of Animal Science plans to optimize a groundwater tank system integrated with rainwater harvesting facilities. Rainwater is collected and filtered for non-consumptive uses, such as watering plants and cleaning campus grounds. The system is designed to improve water distribution efficiency while minimizing groundwater exploitation.

The 3R Principle in Water Management

The Faculty also implements the Reduce–Reuse–Recycle (3R) principle. Non-hazardous wastewater undergoes simple processing to enable its reuse. This measure helps reduce clean water waste while serving as an educational tool for sustainable practices within the campus environment.

Through these efforts, the Faculty not only creates a greener campus environment but also makes a tangible contribution to achieving the SDGs through innovative and sustainable water conservation practices.
