Faculty of Animal Science UGM Organizes IoT-Based Waste Management  Workshop to Advance a Sustainable Campus

Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM) holds a waste management workshop based on Internet of Things (IoT) together with Dr. Ir. Thomas Oka Pratama, M.Eng. from the Faculty of Engineering on Thursday (25/6). The program was joined by members of the Fapet UGM academic community, particularly cleaning service personnel and the Faculty’s HPU (Health Promoting University) team, as an effort to advance their understanding of modern, data-driven, and measurable waste management practices.

During his presentation, Thomas Oka Pratama explained that effective waste management requires accurate data. Without accurate data on the quantity and types of waste generated, efforts to reduce and manage waste effectively become difficult to implement.

“Through an IoT-based waste weighing system, waste generation data can be monitored in real time, enabling more effective evaluation and the formulation of digital, data-driven waste management policies,” Oka explained.

The workshop also introduced specifications and the operating principles of an IoT-based waste weighing system integrated with a server and digital monitoring dashboard. The system is capable of measuring the weight of waste at collection points, classifying waste by type, and displaying daily waste generation trends through an online monitoring platform.

Participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the workshop, remaining actively engaged from beginning to end. In addition to attending the indoor sessions, participants were invited to take part in a hands-on demonstration at the Faculty’s waste collection station. They practiced using the IoT-based waste weighing system, from selecting waste categories and weighing the waste to transmitting the data to the server. This practical session was designed to enhance participants’ skills in implementing technology-based waste management across the campus.

Head of the Administrative Office of Fapet UGM, Nurma Diani Sekarsih, S.Pd., MBA, expressed hope that waste management within the Faculty would become more systematic and efficient, ultimately supporting the development of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly campus.
