Faculty of Animal Science (FAS) students, Muhammad Khoerul Fadhli and Annisa Erlina Yuliani, won the best presentation award in the Scientific Writing Competition (LKTI) in the 2018 Indonesian Animal Science Student Charity Service (BAMPINAS) at Syah Kuala University on 8-11 October 2018.
“Our paper entitled Utilization of Sanghiang Island as a Local Beef Cattle Means Based on Extensive Integrated Farming System to Meet the Needs of Beef in DKI Jakarta,” Khoerul said when being interviewed on Fapet, Friday (10/19).
Erul, the 2015 class student, said that meat production in DKI in 2016 was 24,166 tons, while the demand reached 7.3 million tons. The applied policy strategy has not been able to meet the beef production demanded by the community.
“To overcome this, Indonesia’s geographical conditions consisting of small islands can be used as local cattle farms. Sanghiang Island was chosen because of the easy access to the island and the potential of human resources and natural resources that can be used to carry out the program to meet the demands of meat in DKI, ” explained Erul.
The extensive breeding method was chosen because it aims to accommodate livestock in a large capacity by adopting methods carried out in Australia. Meanwhile, the use of integrated farming systems aims to make this business run continuously with the optimization of existing natural resources.
“This method is carried out by integrating the agriculture, livestock, and forestry sectors as well as good waste management so that a sustainable system will be created. Hopefully, the implementation of this strategy can be carried out comprehensively on all Indonesian islands so as to reduce the national meat import quota, ” said Erul.
In the event organized by the Indonesian Animal Science Student Senate Association (ISMAPETI), the two FAS UGM delegates also participated in a series of other activities, namely a national seminar, charity service, and field trips. (Nadia)
